Pedestrian killed in Valdosta accident

VALDOSTA — Police are investigating a traffic accident that left one man dead Friday.

Around 10 p.m., police, firefighters, deputies and EMTs headed to the 1900 block of the Madison Highway for an accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, a Valdosta Police Department report said.

Officers rendered first aid until EMTs arrived. The man — described only as being 56 years old — died at the scene, the statement said.

The driver of the vehicle said he saw the man in the roadway and tried to swerve to avoid him but could not do so in time, police said.

“This is a tragic accident, and our thoughts go out to everyone it has affected,” said Police Chief Leslie Manahan.
