VALDOSTA — As another surge of Arctic air approaches, forecasters say there is a slight chance of snow in South Georgia next week.

After a brief warming spell at the end of this week, a cold front is expected to bring rainy weather to the region over the weekend, said Wright Dobbs, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office.

“There is a possibility of a second front later in the week, but that’s more uncertain,” he said.

Valdosta’s highs are expected to be in the low 60s through Friday with overnight lows in the upper 30s, the weather service’s forecast shows.

The rain at that time should measure from 1.5 to 2.5 inches, Dobbs said.

The normal high at this time of year for Valdosta is around 65 with a normal low around 38, said Don Pydyowski, senior meteorologist with the private forecasting firm AccuWeather.

After the cold front moves through, the region’s highs should drop into the 40s with lows in the upper 20s, he said.

AccuWeather’s long-range forecasts for Valdosta, Thomasville and Moultrie call for “a chance for a little snow, sleet and rain” Tuesday afternoon with ice mixed with rain Wednesday. The organization’s forecast for Tifton calls for possible “wintry mix” that day.

The National Weather Service is looking at the situation, but there could be a “10% chance of some kind of wintry mix — snow, rain, freezing rain, or sleet” Tuesday for Valdosta, said Molly Merrifield, also a meteorologist with the weather service in Tallahassee.

Neither Dobbs nor Pydyowski saw much of a chance for severe weather in the next week, though they said there was a possibility of a thunderstorm with the weekend rain.
