The Kappa Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. held a tree planting ceremony Tuesday, April 22 in memory of Patricia A. Rayford.
Rayford was a member of the sorority for more than 50 years. She is responsible for initiating the establishment of the graduate chapter in Valdosta, as well as the undergraduate chapter on the campus of Valdosta State University.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded Jan. 15, 1908, on the campus of Howard University. Its purpose is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards; promote unity and friendship among college women; alleviate problems concerning girls and women; maintain a progressive interest in college life; and serve all mankind.
Her husband Willie Rayford, Morning Star Baptist Church pastor Naamen Hooker, former Morning Star Baptist Church pastor the Rev. Dr. William C. Morgan, deaconess ministry Barbara Goss, and Kappa Eta Omega Chapter President Deborah Demps, Ph.D., shared brief reflections on how Patricia Rayford touched their lives and others in the community. Afterwards a Crepe Myrtle was planted on the church lawn in her honor.
