David Van Schaack Van Alstyne

VALDOSTA — David Van Schaack Van Alstyne, 86, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman. Born in Kinderhook, N.Y., on Aug. 26, 1917, he was the son of the late James E. Sr. and Mary Van Schaack Van Alstyne. He was a veteran of WWII serving on D-Day with the 5th Corps, was a recipient of the Silver and Bronze Star and also served during the Korean Conflict. A graduate of Boston University, he had received his master’s from New York State University and was a college professor at North Florida Junior College. He and his wife, the former Frances “Sugar” Stump were active members of the First Presbyterian Church. David was also a member of the Valdosta Country Club, the Elks Club, the Kiwanis Club and the Camellia Society.

In addition to “Sugar,” survivors include a sister, Betty Van Alstyne of Albany, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Sunset Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Donald F. Stanley officiating. — Carson McLane Funeral Home



Annette Gilyard Anderson

LAKELAND — Annette Gilyard Anderson, 36, of Lakeland, died Oct. 6, 2003. She was born Oct. 12, 1966, in Lakeland to Rachel M. Gilyard and Charlie Boone.

She graduated from Lakeland High School and was a faithful member of Heavenly Heights Church Ministry.

She leaves to lament her homegoing her husband, Walter Anderson; her mother, Rachel Gilyard; father, Charlie Boone; grandparents, Emma Lee Calhoun and the late Joe Gilyard and the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Ellen Boone; two sisters, Prophetess Evelyn Hill (Jackie) of Lakeland, and Sherry Kelsaw of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Darron Gilyard (Clestine) of Lakeland; five sisters, Barbara Jean Boone of Atlanta, Diane Reese (Tyrone), Ella Sims (Joe), Tarsha Boone and Mary Weldon, all of Lakeland; eight brothers, Robert Boone (Nadine), Malachi (Dianna), Alfred (Annie), all of Valdosta, Tyrone Boone and Alphonso Boone, both of Lakeland, Pat Boone (Keisha) of Naylor, Dennis Boone (Ya-Vonne) of Conyers, and Ronnie Walker of Ray City; eight aunts, Karen Clarkson (Alvin) of Lakeland, Pearl Huggins of Albany, Patricia Calhoun of Lakeland, Letha (Larry) Gilyard, Juanita Eurbank, Geraldine (Sammie) Gates, Janie Gilyard of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Brenda Boone; four uncles, William Harris (Katie) of San Diego, Calif., Willie Frank Calhoun (Nita) of Waycross, Robert (Ruth) Reese and Marzell (Linda) Reese, both of Lakeland; very devoted nieces and nephews, Jacquline McCaskey (Victor), Evelina Hill, Tamia Foster, Tommy Foster, Felicia Hill, Ja’ir Hill and Erica Hill Kendall and Jessica Wade of Lakeland, Daniel Kelsaw, Cierra Hall, John Hall and Ceasar Hall of Jacksonville, Fla.; special church mother, Charlie Mae McCrae; special cousin, Darlene Belzes; and two special friends, Beverly Wright and Rita McCoggle; and a host of family, cousins and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Gateway to Heaven Holiness Church in Lakeland. Elder Otis L. Calhoun is the pastor. Prophetess Evelyn F. Hill will officiate. Burial will follow in the Charles Knight Cemetery. The body will lie in state two hours prior to funeral time. — Scott and Roberts Mortuary



William Bowen Howard

QUITMAN — William Bowen Howard, 94, of Quitman died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at Brooks County Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born in Brooks County, he was the son of William S. and Kathleen Bowen Howard. He was retired from Hercules Powder Co. in Birmingham, Ala., a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army and a member of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by cousins, Elizabeth Baker, Mary and Jack Dewey, all of Quitman; two half sisters, Vera Winegard and Jean Vaughn of Birmingham, Ala.; and two nieces; Gay Grayson and Betty Gotz, both of Atlanta.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Earl Justice officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Friday. — Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home, Quitman



Marjorie Susan Loftus

VALDOSTA — Marjorie Susan Loftus, 52, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at Fellowship Home following a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born on Aug. 8, 1951, in Jacksonville, Ill. Suzie, as she was known by close friends, was a successful businesswoman in the Valdosta-Tifton area for the last 10 years. Ms. Loftus was a member of Southland Church and devoted much of her time and energy to the facility and to the members there.

Ms. Loftus is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie Elana Bartz Angelo and Michael Angelo, Murrayville, Ill.; her parents, Sidney and Marjorie Manning Bartz, Murrayville, Ill.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Bonna Bartz and Gary and Linda Bartz, Jacksonville, Ill.; and Stephen and Nancy Bartz, Tracy, Calif. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Scan Christopher.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Mackey Dawes Funeral Home in Roodhouse, Ill. Family will receive visitors one hour before the service. A memorial service will be held locally Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at Southland Church, 2206 E. Hill Ave. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Southland Church. — Carson McLane Funeral Home



Walker Register

ADEL — Walker Register, 84, of Adel died Oct. 8, 2003, at his residence.

He was born May 5, 1919, in Cook County to the late Leman Lafayette and Susie Vivian Williford Register. He lived in Cook County all his life. He was a retired farmer, served on Board-Farmers Home Administration, member of the American Legion, Mason and Shriner, ASCS Committee, Army veteran WW II and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elouise Fender Register; one brother, Marvin Register; and three sisters, Mary Nell Joiner, Lona Belle Brown and Pauline Hayes.

He is survived by two sons, Steve and Barbara Dee Register, Kenny Register, all of Adel; four grandchildren, Dr. Ken Register, Valdosta, Kayla Register, Rebecca Gaskins, Lisa Willis, all of Adel; two sisters, Pearlie Williams, Mayme Postell Jordan, both of Adel.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home with the Rev. J.R. Swain Jr. and the Rev. Keith Stith officiating. Burial will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery Annex. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home, Hwy. 41 South. — Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home



Lucille Sneed “Cille” Burney

Lucille Sneed “Cille” Burney, 63, Boston, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Centenary Baptist Church in Boston. The Rev. Michael Johnson, pastor, and Pastor Darren Yearby will officiate. Burial will follow in Boston Cemetery. Jody Lynn Graham

Jody Lynn Graham, 41, Lakeland, passed away Monday morning, Oct. 6,2003, at her place of work following an attack by an intruder. She was born in Hahira and had lived in Lakeland most of he life. She was a member of Ray City Freewill Holiness Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, in the Lakeland Chapel of Music Funeral Services.
