Hugh S. Blanton, Jr.
VALDOSTA — Hugh S. Blanton, Jr., 83, of Valdosta, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at South Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness. Blanton was born on July 11, 1921 in Stockton to the late Hugh S. and Vallye Z. Strickland Blanton, and was a lifelong resident of this area.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he was past president of the Scrap Iron Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of Valdosta High School and attended the University of Georgia. Blanton owned and operated Hugh Blanton Auto Parts in Valdosta for many years and was past president of the Whitewater Hunting and Fishing Club.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law Donna and Roy Cannon of Atlanta and Sandra Gail Jordan of Valdosta; son and daughter-in-law Ronnie and Bebo Blanton of Valdosta; grandchildren Gary Cannon and his wife Tracy, of Valdosta, Kellee King and her husband Paul, of Atlanta, Jessica Ann Jordan, David Lee Jordan, Jr. and Maggie Frances Jordan, all of Valdosta; great-grandchildren Anne Rankin Cannon, Gary Neil Cannon, Jr., Cannon Lee Lane and Mason Blanton King. He was preceeded in death by his wife, Marguerite Norton Blanton, a son, Barry Neil Blanton, and three brothers, Louie Sloan Blanton, Robert Mose Blanton and Donaldson Blanton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Gladys V. Bounds
HAHIRA — Gladys V. Bounds, 74, of Hahira, passed away Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Lakehaven Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. She was born in Memphis, Tenn., and had lived in Hahira for most of her life.
She was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Valdosta. Her husand, Marvin Bounds Sr. and son Baby Boy Bounds preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Shawn Wiese of Omaha, Neb. and Sandra and Ronnie Carter of Lake Placid, Fla.; sons and daughter-in-law Buddy Bounds and Jack and Estelle Bounds, al of Hahira; son-in-law Steve Kautzman of Hahira; grandchildren Ron and Amanda Carter, Jason and Lashae Carter, Jim and Brandy Kautzman, Heather Carter, Woody Kautzman, Brice and Leslie Kautzman, Jacky Bounds, Kristy Bounds, Elizabeth Bounds and Michael Bounds; great-grandchildren Austin Carter and Kaleb Carter and sisters Nadine Speer of Memphis and Ruthann Royce of Polk City, Fla.

Autherene Sermons Lee
COLUMBUS — Autherene Sermons Lee, 59, of Columbus, died Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at her home.
Lee was born June 7, 1945, in Hahira to the late Johnnie Benjamin Sermons, Jr. and Arizona Stewart Sermons. She received her formal education in Lowndes County, graduating from Westside High School in 1963 and from Albany State University in 1968. She did additional studies at the University of Maryland, Frankfurt, Germany, Georgia Southwestern College and Columbus State University.
She was united in holy matrimony to the late Evan Lee on May 6, 1967. To this union one son, Xavier Benjamin Lee was born.
She dedicated her life to Christ at an early age, uniting with the Rocky Hill Church of God in Christ in Mineola. She later joined Word of Truth Church of God in Christ and Wynnton Road Church of God in Christ on Columbus. She served faithfully as Youth Director, church mother and member of the Young Women’s Christian Council.
Lee’s passion was to help, which she fulfilled by being a most caring and compassionate nurse. She began her nursing career at South Georgia Medical Center. She was also employed at The Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital, and medically retired from West Central Georgia Regional Hospital in Columbus.
In 1978, she co-founded The Columbus Metro Black Nurses Association. In 1981, she founded the Columbus Georgia Lupus Society. She organized the Columbus Georgia Chapter of the Blind and served as chairman of the Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities. She was an honorary member of Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority. She received numerous civic awards throughout the year.
Those cherishing her memories are her son; her mother; sisters and brothers-in-law Geneva and Robert Miley of Adel, Sandra and Willie Clark of Decatur, Johnsie and Gregory Banks of Hahira and Julia Sermons of Columbus; brothers and sisters-in-law Alvester and Jessie Sermons of Hahira, Henry and Edith Sermons of Hahira of Hahira nad Johnnie Benjamin Sermons III of Hahira; two grandchildren Torrey Howard-Lee of Columbus and Keon Lee of Atlanta; four uncles and aunt-in-laws Deacon Amos and Bessie Sermons of Palatka, Fla., Elder Arletha and Gladys Sermons of Hahira, Elder Amos Darring of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ellis Woods of Valdosta; aunts Sally Sermons of Hahira, Arola Sermons of Miami, Fla., and Alma Stewart; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life for Lee will be held at noon Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Peaceful Holiness Church, 4944 Buena Vista Road, Columbus. Bishop Thomas Mott will officiate with Elder Lewis C. Clemons as eulogist. Interment will follow in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, Ala. Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sconiers Funeral Home with a family hour from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by the Chi Eta Phi Nursing Association Memorial Service. — Sconiers Funeral Home.
Paul B. “Ben” Mcleod
JASPER, FLA. — Paul B. “Ben” Mcleod, 22, of Jasper, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Ben was a lifelong resident of Jasper, attended Hamilton County High School and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include wife Angela Mcleod of Jasper; parents Bryan and Linda Mcleod of Jasper; maternal grandmother Lou Jean Fouraker of Jasper; paternal grandmother Rose Ellen Brockway of Lucedale, Miss and cousins Stacey Padgett and Ryan Fornes.
He was preceeded in death by his grandfathers Wiley Mcleod and Walter Ellis Fouraker.
Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, in the Prospect Prim Baptist Church of White Springs, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at the funeral home. — Harry T. Reid Funeral Home.
Warren Sidney Soule III
JASPER — Warren Sidney Soule, III, of Jasper, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, from injuries sustained in an auto accident.
Warren was a lifelong resident of Jasper, a graduate of Corinth Christian Academy and a member of First Baptist Church of Jasper. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include father Sidney Soule of Jasper; sister Jessica Soule of Jasper; paternal grandmother Johnnie Soule of Jasper and maternal grandmother Bertie Hester of Genoa, Fla.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, in Swift Creek Cemetery of Jasper. Visitation with the family will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at the funeral home. — Harry T. Reid Funeral Home.
