Florene DeLoach

VALDOSTA — Florene P. DeLoach, 81, died at her home in Valdosta on Monday, April 21, 2003. Born in Brooks County, on Oct. 11, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Cora Guess Parker. Mrs. DeLoach retired from the Lowndes County School System as a bus driver. She was an active member of the Central Avenue Church of Christ.

Survivors are her husband, J. C. DeLoach of Valdosta; her children, Jerry and Gail DeLoach, Mickey and Debra DeLoach, Vickie and Glenn Copeland, all of Valdosta; grandchildren, Wayne (Brandie) DeLoach, Jennifer (Jaret) Johnson, Tracie (Jay) Barfield, Michael DeLoach, Ashli DeLoach, Garrett Copeland, Nick Copeland; great grandchild, Hailee Nicole DeLoach; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jake and Dorothy Parker, Elmer and Mary Parker of Valdosta; James and Sylvia Parker of Hahira; sisters and brother-in-law, Evelyn Caldwell, Ruth Bush, Inez Steedley, Kathleen and Frank Culpepper of Valdosta; sister in law, Bertha Pittman of Valdosta.

Funeral services will be held today April 24, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. J.C. McMullen and Mr. C. J. Moffett officiating. Entombment will be in the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family received friends on Wednesday evening from 7- 9 p.m. at the funeral home. — Carson McLane Funeral Home





Evelyn Sharpe Fowler

MOULTRIE — Evelyn Sharpe Fowler, 70, of Moultrie died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at her residence.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 25, at Cobb Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mark Stone officiating. Burial will be in Cobb Suncrest Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Lavon Striplin, Danny Strickland, Charles Hall, Clark Edwards, Dallas Hall and Bryan Bourrie.

Born Feb. 14, 1933, in Lowndes County, Mrs. Fowler was the daughter of the late Avie Wetherington Sharpe and Robert Emmette Sharpe Sr. She was a homemaker and a member of Berlin Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Buddy Fowler, who died April 25, 2002.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce Fowler and wife Jan, Glenn Fowler and wife Sheila all of Moultrie; a daughter, Sharon F. Hansen and husband Murray of Warner Robins; a brother, Wallace Sharpe of Hahira; two sisters, Wilna S. Guthrie of Barney and Beverly S. Wilkes of Viera, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Scott Fowler, Ashley Fowler, Holly Alligood and husband Bert, Haley Pinder and husband Shane, Josh Collett, Adam Collett, Quinn Hansen and Lindsey Barnes; and a great-grandson, Zachery Shelton.

Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. tonight at the funeral chapel. The family may be contacted at the residence, 7390 Ga.

Grace B. Green

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Grace B. Green, 85, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Valdosta died on April 21, 2003 at her residence.

She was a homemaker and member of Germantown Church of Christ. She taught piano and worked for United Way in Valdosta for many years and was a secretary at Georgia Christian School in Valdosta.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Ernest W. Green; daughters, Joy Baker of Calhoun City, Miss., Kathy Nunnally, Searcy, Ark.; sons, Bob Green and Jim Green, both of Charlotte, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. today, April 24, 2003 at Family Funeral Care Summer Ave. Chapel, Memphis, Tenn. Burial will be held in Cordova Community Cemetery.

Bernice Royals Mattox

Bernice Royals Mattox, 77, of Stockton, Ga., passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 23, 2003, in South Georgia Medical Center, following a brief illness. She was born in Atkinson County, Ga., and had lived in Stockton most of her life. She was retired from Brockway Standard and was a member of Stockton Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, June V. Mattox; granddaughter, Karen Moore; one brother and one sister.

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Albert Davis, Dupont, Ga., Marjorie and Ira Fender, Dupont, Ga., Latrelle Smith, Homerville, Ga., Vivian Bennett, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Mike and Debbie Bennett, Stockton, Ga., Dean Bennett, Naylor, Ga.; three stepchildren; eight grandchildren, Sheila Rogers, Ronald Ludwick, Bryan Moore, Timmy Cantey, Jimmy Cantey, Melissa Tinajero, Jerry Bennett and Billy Bennett. and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2003, in Stockton Baptist Church, with burial following in Wayfare Cemetery, Echols County. Mrs. Mattox will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services.

Visitation will begin at 7 p.m. tonight, with family receiving friends until 9 p.m. at the funeral home. — Music Funeral Services, Lakeland, is serving the Mattox family.



Raymond A. Schanze, Jr.

ATLANTA — Raymond A. Schanze, Jr., passed away in Atlanta on April 21, 2003, following a brief illness.

A native of Jacksonville, Fla., he was a 1960 graduate of Clinch County High School and attended South Georgia College in Douglas, Ga. After graduation, he lived briefly in Atlanta before going to New York City where he resided for 30 years. He was a Playwright-in-Residence at La Mama Theatre, Off-Broadway, and enjoyed great success having several of his plays produced while there. He retired in 1999 and moved back to Atlanta. His parents Dr. Raymond A. Schanze and Maree Carswell Schanze and his grandparents Allen Carswell and O’Vella Carswell preceded him in death.

Survivors are two uncles, Ashley Carswell of Homerville, and Roscoe Carswell of Waycross; one aunt, Virginia Carswell King of Waycross; and a number of other relatives.

Graveside services for Mr. Schanze will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2003 in the Pine Forest Cemetery in Homerville with the Rev. Marty Fields of Atlanta officiating.

Rochelle Smith

VALDOSTA — Rochelle Smith, 95, of Valdosta and formerly of Birmingham, died on Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at South Georgia Medical Center. Born on Aug. 5, 1907, in Helena, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Carey Edgar and Julia Velma Coleman Edwards and widow of John Comer Smith. Formerly of Birmingham, she had made her home in Valdosta since 1993. Before her retirement she had worked as a nursing home caregiver. Mrs. Smith was a Baptist.

Survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Harold Bethea of Valdosta; son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Marianne Smith of Gardendale, Ala.; grandchildren, Carol and Riley Brown, Ken and Katrina Bethea of Valdosta, Jeanie and Michael Bachrach of West Palm Beach, Fla.; numerous great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Funeral services and will be held in Gardendale, Ala., Ridouts Brown Service, Gardendale Chapel, in charge of arrangements. Charles Ashley Folsom, 85, Wilson, N.C., died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, in Sanford at the home of his daughter and son-in-law after a brief battle with lung cancer. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Branson Sheets and Rev. Gerald Riggs at 2 p.m. Friday at Bailey Baptist Church, Bailey, N.C. Burial will follow at Bailey Cemetery. Gwendolyn Aldrena Johnson, 51, of Valdosta passed this life April 19, 2003, after injuries received in an auto accident. The family will receive friends from 4-6 today at the funeral home. Esther Powell, 77, of White Springs, Fla. passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at Lake City Medical Center in Lake City, Fla. following a brief illness.
