VALDOSTA — Myra Stevens, also known as Sister Bishop, has been spiritually connecting with the Valdosta community for about 50 years.

The seasoned psychic said she first developed abilities while a young child, having had a grandmother who also possessed psychic power.

“When I was younger, I used to feel things about people. Sometimes, I’d get a feeling about something; I’d tell them about it,” she said. “Then, later on, people came asking me, ‘What do you see about me?’ but I didn’t always see something about that person but if I did, I would tell them.

“And then, later, it got to where people were interested for me to tell them about themselves, so I started reading cards, and that way it would help me get in on things,” Stevens said.

Stevens said she was born with her psychic abilities, which she says come from a higher power. It took practice to get in tune with people. She said she wouldn’t get any feeling about people when she first met them.

Honing her craft comes through meetings with other psychics and better understanding one’s personal abilities, she said.

Though Stevens said she is not able to speak to the dead, she can see the future by using tarot cards, palms and occasionally a crystal ball.

“It’s just whatever (I) want to use to get in on it to see everything I need to see,” she said.

She senses a spirit is telling her something or leading her into something. Her natural abilities stem from intuition, informing clients about sicknesses or any forthcoming problems.

Sessions involve Stevens getting a reading from a person and telling them what comes to her. From this method, there is no way of knowing exactly what a client will receive, she said.

With monthly regulars, clients come to see Stevens to learn about their health, intimate relationships and business affairs. While some of her clients specifically know what they would like Stevens to detect, others don’t, she said.

Most of Stevens’ visitors are local residents, though she said some people see her business sign while passing through Valdosta and stop for a reading, including a Florida mayor.

Her powers assist people in changing their destiny, she said. Stevens said she helped a person avoid a car accident by telling one person not to drive sometime during the month.

“I would say I advised her well. … I’ve told people to check on this or check on that, and they went and checked on it, and they found the little problem and got things straightened out,” she said.

There are many people who live by what psychics tell them; however, there are also nonbelievers, she said. When Stevens encounters skeptics, she tells them to not get a reading if they don’t believe. Though she said she has transformed nonbelievers into believers.

While Stevens can tell the future for strangers, she said she is not able to predict her future or the future of family members. The mother of five said she has one daughter who performs little readings.

Sister Bishop, 2120 W. Hill Ave., is open by appointment seven days per week. Sessions are $40 and usually last about 20-30 minutes.

“If someone just walks in, I’m not going to turn them away,” Stevens said. Call (229) 244-1306 for more information.
