GAINESVILLE — Cooper Johnson and Jack Litten were Valwood’s only representatives at the state GIAA wrestling tournament last weekend, but the two made the most of it.

Litten won the state title at 144 pounds and Johnson was fourth in the 120-pound class.

According to official results on Track Wrestling, Litten’s crown came via a 14-4 major decision over Zane Chavis of Athens Christian. The Eagles won the team title, but had no luck with Litten.

Litten gave up an opening takedown, but soon rallied to have a 6-3 lead at the end of the first period. He got takedown of his own and held Chavis scoreless in the second. A takedown in the third was more than enough to win.

To reach the finals, Litten scored a first-round pin over Stratford’s Cale Smith, then had a 7-0 win over Caleb Benton of Piedmont. Litten worked late to pin Luke Blankenship of Brookstone in the semifinals.

Johnson won his first-round match over Jones Lewis-Capo of host school Riverside Prep in only 20 seconds. If that wasn’t fast enough, Johnson advanced to the semifinals with a 12-second fall over Bryson Thompson of Westfield.

Johnson was pinned in the semis, then dropped the third-place match to Sean Brannon of St. Anne-Pacelli.
