Noted Tallahassee eye doctor, Joel Shugar, died Monday after being involved in a midair skydiving collision in Eloy, Ariz.
The 49-year-old was an avid skydiver and was participating in a formation training exercise at the Skydive Arizona facility when his canopy collided with another diver about 80 to 100 feet above the landing zone at approximately 3 p.m., according to an Eloy Police Department spokesperson quoted by The Arizona Republic. The parachute failed to reopen before the landing.
The other diver involved in the accident managed to land safely.
Shugar was pronounced dead at approximately 4:15 p.m. at Casa Grande Regional Medical Center in Casa Grande, Ariz., approximately 15 miles northeast of Eloy.
Shugar was well known for participating in the annual Gift of Sight Day at Nature Coast EyeCare Institute in Perry, Fla. performing free cataract surgeries for patients throughout the region who would not otherwise be able to afford the procedure.
Funeral services for Shugar are expected to be held Sunday in Tallahassee.
The family has asked, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Big Bend Hospice of Taylor County, 1723 Mayhan Center Blvd., Tallahassee FL 32308.
