BLAZER SOFTBALL WINS TWO OF THREE GAMES

In St. Leo, Fla., Valdosta State’s softball team won two of its first three games and was tied for second at the Outback Classic.

In the first game Friday, Brooke King pitched a no-hitter to lead the Lady Blazers to a 5-0 victory over Eckerd. King struck out five batters in holding Eckerd hitless.

Valdosta State’s next game was suspended Friday night by rain, and resumed Saturday. When it did resume, VSU wound up winning 4-3 in nine innings. Brooke Faile singled home pinch runner Amanda Allgood with the winning run.

Angela Lauzon pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on 12 hits, and striking out six.

Saturday afternoon, VSU lost 2-0 to Central Missouri State. King allowed just three hits and struck out four batters, but VSU could only muster singles by Jenny McDuffie and Kathy Watkins.

The Lady Blazers (11-11) played another game late Saturday. The tournament shifts to single elimination Sunday.

BLAZER TENNIS TEAMS FALL IN SAVANNAH

In Savannah, Valdosta State’s eighth-ranked tennis team lost 5-4 to No. 12 Armstrong Atlantic State Saturday.

Christoph Schneider and Peter Kreutzfeldt won in singles for the Blazers, while the doubles teams of Kreutzfeldt-Marco Borges and Schnedier-Norman Weidle also won.

The No. 25 Lady Blazers lost 7-2 to the No. 2 AASU women. Natalie Drabova, ranked 47th in Division II, and Annika Biro recorded singles wins for VSU.

BERRIEN BASEBALL SPLITS TWO GAMES

In Valdosta, Berrien High baseball split two games Saturday.

Eagle’s Landing defeated Berrien, 3-1, scoring twice in the second and once in the fourth.

For Berrien, Clay Davis went 2-for-4 and scored a run. J.L. Taylor was also 2-for-4, with a pair of doubles. The Rebels left 10 runners on base. Adam Wilkerson allowed 3 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings pitched for Berrien.

Later Saturday, Berrien defeated Thomas County Central 8-7. TCC scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-6 lead, but Berrien came back in the bottom of the seventh to win on Taylor’s two-run double.

Davis launched a three-run homer in the fifth, and scored the winning run in the seventh. Taylor went 2-for-3, with the game-winning double in the seventh.

B.J. Warren went 2-for-4 and scored two runs. John Temples earned the win in relief for Berrien (2-1).
