David Matthews leads Lowndes County Amateur

VALDOSTA — David Matthews shot a 2-under par 70 and leads after the first round of the Lowndes County Amateur, held at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club. Matthews’ round Saturday included an eagle-2 on hole No. 7 and birdies on holes 6, 13 and 16.

In second place was David Clark with an even-par 72. Clark’s round included birdies on 9 and 16. Finishing third were Mark Robinson and Rob Bellinger at 74.

In the men’s senior division, Rick Bellinger posted an even-par round of 72 for a three-stroke lead over Greg Beale and Bill Danbury, who each shot a 75. In the men’s super senior division, Melvin Plair and John Wood are tied at 84.

In the women’s division, Jenny Warren posted a 107 to take a three-stroke lead over Marci Valley.

Second-round action will begin today at 8:30 a.m. The ladies will tee off first, followed by men’s seniors and men’s super seniors and the championship flight at 9 a.m.
