MOULTRIE — Lowndes’ Vikings extended their golf season Monday by qualifying for the Class 6A state sectionals courtesy of a third-place finish at the combined region/area tournament at Sunset Country Club.
Led by a 71 from Camden Yager, Lowndes finished at 297 for the day.
Colquitt County and Harrison both shot 294, qualifying both of those squads directly for the state tournament. Lowndes and Richmond Hill, who shot 308, will be going to sectionals for the opportunity to play at state.
Tift County barely missed doing the same with a 310 score. Camden County turned in a 327, Hillgrove was at 329, Campbell at 339, Valdosta at 371 and Paulding County at 386 for the rest of the full teams at Sunset.
Mason Pate carded a 72 for the Vikings. Their other counting scores were a 75 from Noah Davis and a 79 from Kaleb Shiver. Jackson Arnold shot 82 and Jimmy Cohen 83, according to the official scorecards.
Valdosta was paced by Aiden Winningham’s 78. Tripp Perry shot a 93 for the day and Jacob Nichols finished at 99. Ronald Pitcock had the other counting score at 101.
Bennett Boone and Rustin Spray were on the course as well in Moultrie.
Sectionals for the Vikings are next week in Villa Rica.
Should Lowndes score low enough at sectionals, they will play state in their own backyard. Like the girls, Class 6A’s big finale is May 19-20 at Kinderlou Forest.
