VALDOSTA — The Lowndes Vikings ended their regional series against Valdosta on Friday night on a high note, claiming both games of a doubleheader at home to sweep the Wildcats, with Garrett Moon throwing a no-hitter in the second game.
Game One: Lowndes 9, Valdosta 4
Game one saw early fireworks from Valdosta as the Wildcats took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, stringing together hits, walks, and a pair of doubles to chase Lowndes starter Heath Davis before he could record an out.
Dylan Inman took over and shifted the momentum. The reliever threw five steady innings, allowing just one earned run, walking two, and striking out eight. His presence on the mound calmed the Vikings while their offense prepared to respond in full force.
Coleman Lewis crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the first to spark the comeback, and went on to lead the team with four total bases. Doubles from Dawkins Parker, Matthew Kerrigan, Tyler Parker, and Noah Burnham fueled a four-run second inning that flipped the game’s momentum for good.
The Vikings capitalized on Wildcat miscues throughout the game, with Valdosta committing four errors. Westin Hancock and Derrick Carter anchored key defensive stops for Lowndes, while relievers Michael Fletcher and Waylon Weidinger combined to hold the Wildcats scoreless over the final two innings.
Although the Wildcats had a good start to the game, the Wildcats could not keep up with the Viking threat. A double in the top of the fourth from Matt Bounds would net the visiting team their last run of the game as their bats began to cool.
Game Two: Lowndes 3, Valdosta 0
In the nightcap game, Lowndes’ Moon turned in a performance for the books, throwing a no-hitter while striking out 10. The senior allowed only two walks as he baffled Valdosta hitters all game long.
The Vikings started strong in the bottom of the first, Cason Fletcher was struck by a pitch, stole second, and came around to score on Burnham’s RBI single. In the fifth, Lewis doubled to right field and advanced Fletcher—who had again reached after being hit—setting up Burnham’s sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. In the sixth, Kason Kendrick singled and eventually scored on an error by the Wildcats, giving Lowndes a 3-0 cushion.
Valdosta’s Colton Howell pitched a gritty six-inning effort, allowing four hits and striking out two. However, with Viking pressure mounting and hits hard to come by, the Wildcats could not close the score on the home team.
Moon capped his masterpiece with a seventh-inning double play and groundout to secure the sweep and one of the strongest pitching performances of the season for the Vikings.
With the final regional series completed for the season, both teams now aim to conclude the season in their own way. The Wildcats aim to complete any remaining games while looking forward to summer ball and the next season. However, for Lowndes, a challenging post-season is expected to push the Region 1-6A champions to their limits.
