VALDOSTA — Valdosta’s Makiyah Brewton was leaps and bounds ahead of others Tuesday at the Region 1-6A track meet, winning twice in the field event finals.

Brewton was more than a foot ahead of the runner-up in triple, getting 37-9.5. In the long jump Brewton jumped 17-4.5, five inches ahead of second.

All field events took place Tuesday at host Valdosta High, leaving only track to complete when the meet resumes Thursday. There were, however, three track events that were run as finals on the first day: 800 meters, 3,200 meters and the 4×200 relay.

Lowndes’ Kendall Johnson won the 800 meters in 2:12, almost five full seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Valerie Roberts, also of Lowndes, was third. For the boys, Jacob McGhin of Valdosta placed fourth.

In field events, the high jump battle did not reach the heights of previous events, but Tift County’s Jamari Johnson cleared 6-6 to win, with Jamir Bradley of Valdosta getting 6-4 for second.

While Bradley was edged in high jump, he won the triple jump at 44-6.

Klen Flanigan soared over an even 12 feet to claim first in pole vault. Two others had 11-6. Pole vault was a sweep for the Vikings and Vikettes. Kaitlyn Williams finished in a three-way tie for first at 7 feet. Lowndes picked up another win in shot put, Desmond Frazier throwing 52-3.75.
